  • Why It Matters: If your medical records or selfies train a commercial model, that model monetises you—often without benefit or control.

2. Mandatory Public AI Impact Assessments

Bottom line: Measure before you deploy.

  • The Rule: Every public-facing AI must publish a living Impact Dossier—comprising bias metrics, labor-displacement forecasts, energy usage, and third-party audit results—before launch and at set intervals.

  • Why It Matters: Currently, we are beta-testing on real people without a scoreboard.

  • What Good Looks Like: Canada’s Algorithmic Impact Assessment framework (Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, 2022), Article 29 of the draft EU AI Act (European Parliament & Council, 2024).

3. Right to Human Review

Bottom line: Algorithms shouldn’t have the last word.

  • The Rule: Housing, hiring, healthcare, education, and criminal‑justice decisions must include a clear, no‑fee appeal path to a qualified human.

  • Why It Matters: Mistakes and biases are inevitable; recourse is not.

  • What Good Looks Like: Decision letters that explain algorithmic logic in plain English and a 30‑day window to request human review.




4. Transparent & Auditable Systems

Bottom line: Sunshine beats black boxes.

  • The Rule: Vendors must disclose training data sources, high‑level model architecture, and audit logs.

  • Why It Matters: Trust collapses when nobody—citizen, journalist, or regulator—can peek under the hood.

  • What Good Looks Like: New York City’s Local Law 144 bias‑audit requirement for hiring algorithms (NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, 2023).




5. Ban Predictive Policing & Mass‑Surveillance AI

Bottom line: No justice without evidence.

  • The Rule: Facial recognition, gait analysis, and predictive policing tech should be paused until independent studies prove they operate without racial or disability bias.

  • Why It Matters: Automating yesterday’s injustices only scales them.

  • What Good Looks Like: Portland’s municipal face‑recognition ban (City of Portland, 2020); the proposed federal Biometric Privacy Act 2.0 (Senate Bill 4400, 2020).
